How to Write a Cover Letter That Actually Gets Read in the Philippines
By Ana Reyes
Most Filipino applicants skip the cover letter or copy-paste a generic one. Here's how to write one that makes hiring managers stop and read.
How to Write a Cover Letter That Actually Gets Read in the Philippines
Here's the brutal truth: most cover letters are terrible. Generic, copy-pasted, and completely forgettable. But a great cover letter can be the difference between getting an interview and getting archived.
Do You Even Need One?
Not always. But when the job posting asks for one — or when you're applying to a competitive role or a company you really want — a well-crafted cover letter dramatically increases your chances.
The Structure That Works
Opening (2-3 sentences)
Don't start with "I am writing to apply for..." — everyone does that. Instead, lead with something specific:
"When I saw that Accenture Philippines was hiring a UX Designer to work on fintech products, I stopped scrolling. I've spent the last three years designing mobile banking interfaces, and I'd love to bring that work to your team."
The Middle (1-2 paragraphs)
Connect 2-3 of your specific experiences to the job requirements. Use numbers where possible. Show that you've done your research about the company.
The Close (2-3 sentences)
Express enthusiasm, thank them for their time, and make a clear call to action:
"I'd love the opportunity to discuss how my background in UX research can contribute to your product roadmap. Thank you for considering my application — I look forward to hearing from you."
Filipino-Specific Tips
- Address the right person — if you can find the hiring manager's name on LinkedIn, use it instead of "Dear Sir/Madam"
- Mention referrals — if a current employee referred you, mention their name early
- Keep it under one page — brevity is a sign of respect for the reader's time
The One Mistake to Avoid
Don't make it about what you want from the company. Make it about what you can give to the company.
